He’s been everywhere from Hull City to India – but never has Darryl Duffy missed the target with a penalty.

The veteran striker, who can count Falkirk, Rangers, Hull City and many, many more amongst his former clubs, is now plying his trade for Stranraer in League Two.

Stevie Farrell’s side headed to Ayr United over the weekend looking to book a superb League Cup last 16 place. It started so well for the former Hull City man, scoring inside the first couple of minutes.

Then he was given the opportunity to score from the spot to double Stranraer’s advantage against Championship opposition. He blasted it over the bar, Duffy’s side eventually losing 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

“It’s the first time in 20 years I’ve missed the target with a penalty,” said Duffy at full-time. “I had it in my mind the whole time I was going to whip it low down the left.

“I saw the goalkeeper move early and I’ve clipped it over the bar. I can’t believe it – first time ever and what a time to do it. I’m really confident with penalties for that reason so it’s really disappointing for that reason because I thought we deserved more from the game.
We need to start turning our draws into wins and if we can do that we’ll be a force to be reckoned with in League Two and definitely be top four. As long as I continue to feel good I’ll continue playing.”
