David Gray answers Hibs ‘soft centre’ accusation and plans Hearts spying mission

Hibs have been in this movie before as fans begin to question everything amid a slump.

Current manager David Gray is well-versed in it too having been involved in his fair share of ups and downs both as a player and a coach at the Easter Road club.

The heat is more on him as an individual this time after they hit bottom of the Premiership only eight league games into his tenure.

There has been five defeats from those eight but the loss to Dundee United at the weekend stung more than most as they led 2-1 going into the final five minutes before losing captain Joe Newell to a red card and then TWO goals in stoppage time.

Up next for the Hibees is a home derby against Hearts in which a victory could be invigorating but a defeat could be catastrophic.

Gray on Hibs ‘soft centre’ question

Hibs have often been accused of being a bit soft over the years.

Gray is well aware of that having captained the club and then moved onto the coaching staff, but he does point out it only seems to be brought up after a defeat.

The head coach does admit the mistakes in the last two games have made it look that way but insists it is something he can sort.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s something that ever since I’ve been at this club has been mentioned. I think it always rears its head after a defeat.

“One thing that I can’t stand here and make an excuse for is what’s happened the last two weeks. Because at the end of the day when we do make mistakes were are being punished for them at the moment.

“The reality of the situation is we need to be stronger in these moments, we know that. It is a new group but at the same time as players, as coaches and everybody involved needs to stick together and rectify it.”

Asked about how much of the errors is down to ‘concentration and mentality’, he added: “It’s a bit of everything really. I think it’s more about doing everything you possibly can to double down if you’re teammate makes a mistake, for example. To pull your teammate out a hole, rallying together during adversity.”

Hearts derby a massive opportunity for Hibs

Gray insists the capital clash at Easter Road on Sunday is a big chance for the Hibees rather than being something to look upon with trepidation.

Hearts play Omonia in the Conference League on Thursday and he will be watching on to learn a bit about their rivals under new boss Neil Critchley.

Gray said: “Well they’ve got a game before they play us so we’ll find out a bit more from that game. The full focus is on how we can improve, keeping 11 players on the pitch will certainly be a start, we know that.

“It’s a great opportunity at home against your local rivals to really kickstart your season.”
