David Gray names what three Hibs stars did well vs Kilmarnock and plays down reporter question

Hibs suffered the blow of a 92nd minute equaliser for Kilmarnock yesterday.

If your glass is half full, they stretched their Premiership unbeaten run to 14 games. If it’s half empty, they failed to tighten their grip on third.

The Hibees looked good for all three points as they led for most of the game through Martin Boyle’s 25th minute opener.

But former Easter Road midfielder Fraser Murray pounced in stoppage time to make sure it was just one point heading back to the capital.

Dundee United could now potentially go third if they win their derby by enough goals.

David Gray had ‘no complaints’ about Hibs defeat to Celtic last weekend. Was it the same after having to settle for a point against Kilmarnock?

Hibs trio Martin Boyle, Junior Hoilett and Dylan Levitt praised

The opening goal was a swift and decisive counter attack from a Killie corner with Boyle using his pace on the break and then finishing.

Junior Hoilett was involved at the start to set up the counter and then Dylan Levitt had the composure to find Boyle, who did the rest.

Gray had praise for all three and their roles in the goal.

Asked about Boyle’s importance during his post-match press conference, he said: “Yes, he’s doing really well. It’s great to see. He’s done that for a number of years in this league. It can really affect games, he’s a real threat on the break especially. You saw that today.

“I think the goal comes from being set up properly at a corner. Junior Hoilett was switched on, the set-up was really good, everyone doing their job defensively and then we break away from there. We’ve always got pace on the break when Boyley plays, but even the composure for Dylan Levitt – that’s something we do in training when we do 2 v 1s and practice those moments.

“It’s very different in a game when it’s under pressure and you need to get that timing right. He showed real composure; a real quality weighted pass, and it’s great that Boyley gets his reward for sprinting up the pitch and the timing of his run for a good finish.”

Hibs return to nasty habit

It was a throwback to Hibs’ nasty habit earlier in the season of conceding late goals after not doing enough to take their own chances earlier in the game.

It hasn’t happened for a while but Gray insists he had never assumed that it they had completely eradicated that from their game.

He added: “No, I think that’s just something that happens in football. I don’t think you can ever think that you’re over the line. If you look at the goal we lose, it’s poor. We gave away a silly foul on the halfway line which was needless, and then from there they get the long throw. So they’re going to have moments in the game that force you to defend within the game.

“I thought we dealt with that really well. But in that moment, we had to defend it better and we paid the price for it. They get the goal.

“Up until that point, it was a brilliant away performance. We controlled the ball, we had the best chances within the game, but as I’ve just said, when it’s only 1-0, you always run that risk.”
