Hibs hero Derek Riordan believes Leigh Griffiths could silence his doubters if he returned to his boyhood club from Celtic this summer.
Griffiths has scored seven goals for Celtic this season but has been strongly linked with moves back to Easter Road, where he featured prominently between 2011-13, scoring over 35 goals. He has scored 124 times for Celtic since joining the Hoops in 2014.
But after a frustrating term this season, Griffiths could leave Celtic. The Parkhead club have the option of activating an extension clause at the end of this month, otherwise, Griffiths could leave for free. Hibs manager Jack Ross has confirmed he would be open to a discussion to a move if it became a possibility, which it isn’t as things stand.
But Riordan – who made over 200 Hibs appearances in his career – believes Griffiths could prove critics wrong in Leith (EFS): “I’ve always said I’d love to see Griffiths back at Hibs. He reminds me a wee bit of myself in that he can shoot from anywhere and gets you off your seat. For me he’s the best striker in the league.
“I’d love to have him back at Easter Road but it would cost Hibs a few bob and whether they want to do that, I’m not too sure. It would be massive for Hibs but I can’t see them pulling it off. His wages will be really high but you never know in football. He’s 31 in August but I still think he’s good enough to go down to England and play.
“Players just have absolute shockers at one club where it just doesn’t work, then they go to another club and they’re on fire. Look at Lukaku. Brilliant at Everton and got his big move to Man United, then people started saying he was rubbish. Not for me, I would’ve kept him at Man United. Now he’s gone to Inter Milan and he’s tearing it up.”
