He’s the top scorer at Motherwell this season – but Devante Cole will wait and see whether the Fir Park club want to keep him around beyond the summer.

Cole arrived for his second spell at Motherwell earlier this term, having spent some time on loan at the club from Wigan Athletic in the first half of the 2019/20 season. He has scored 10 goals with five assists this term, 13 of those goal contributions coming under new manager Graham Alexander.

Former manager Stephen Robinson brought him back to the club on a deal until the end of the season but now Cole is waiting on the club to make their move “I think we just have to wait for the club, it’s up to them, it’s nothing to do with me, I don’t make the decision, so that’s down to the club.

“In terms of being at Motherwell this is the best form I’ve been on. Obviously it has been a good last few months for myself. I think there’s still more to come but this season is coming to an end now, so I think it’s just a case of continuing this kind of form onto next year.

“This is my second time back here, it was only three or four months the last time so it has been a bit longer this time. I think I’m probably showing on the pitch that I’m a bit more settled. Results have been good, and I’ve played better football.”

Motherwell face a Scottish Cup quarter-final match with Hibs this afternoon, Cole scoring last time out at Easter Road in a 2-0 win. They will be without fellow frontmen in Jordan Roberts and Tony Watt on this occasion but Cole is backing his teammates to adapt.

He said: “We’ve been able to rise to the occasion against some of the bigger teams. We have to feel confident going into this game, we’re on the back of four straight wins, so hopefully we can just continue that onto this game and get a good result.

“Jordan Roberts and Tony Watt are out and that puts more responsibility onto myself and Christopher Long up front, but injuries are just part of the game. We would prefer to have them back and playing in the squad, but it’s just up to me and Longy to do the best that we can at the moment.

“I think a cup run would give something back to the fans after a bit of a disappointing season. I think a good cup run and beating Hibs on Saturday would be ideal for the fans. We’re going there as underdogs and I think that plays into our hands a bit; I think it always does.”
