Dimitar Mitov Aberdeen injury update as Jimmy Thelin reacts

If there was one man Aberdeen didn’t want to lose to injury it was probably Dimitar Mitov.

The Dons have had several key performers this season such as Sivert Nilsen, Pape Gueye, Nicky Devlin and Jack MacKenzie, to name but a few.

But the Bulgarian goalkeeper, signed from St Johnstone in the summer, has probably outshone them all.

Mitov has made some big penalty saves which are his most telling contributions but his all-round performances have been a huge part of taking the Dons to second in the table.

Before yesterday he had played in every single minute of Premiership action, only missing a Premier Sports Cup group stage tie with East Kilbride.

Mitov Aberdeen injury concern

That was until Mitov picked up a knock during the first half of the draw with Hearts at Tynecastle and had to be withdrawn at half-time.

Ross Doohan came in for his first minutes since that East Kilbride game and probably could have done better with the Jambos’ equalising goal.

Aberdeen will now be sweating on the fitness of their number one with a big top-of-the-table clash against Celtic coming on Wednesday.

Manager Jimmy Thelin delivered an update on his situation post-match.

He said: “Let’s see tomorrow, we need to make a real check on him first, but he couldn’t keep playing so we needed to change him.

“I want them to see exactly what it is first before I say something. Let’s see, but the good thing was Ross came in and did really well and he looked really prepared, so we have a good squad.”

Stand-in left-back James McGarry was another who took a knock and Thelin added: “Again, I don’t know exactly what happened, I think it was more a hit, I’m not so worried about his hamstring, but let’s see.”

Jimmy Thelin thoughts on Hearts vs Aberdeen

Thelin thought it was a good point for his Aberdeen side rather than an opportunity missed, the Tynecastle point their second gained in Edinburgh this week.

Asked that question by Premier Sports, he said: “I think how the game went it is a good point. We tried, I liked the way the players approached the game. They really tried to find a winning goal.

“But we also lost the ball in some areas and they got also some opportunities.

“It was a tricky game and we were fighting hard in two away games in Edinburgh.”
