Dwight Gayle says his summer retirement plans could be shelved because of the enjoyment he is getting playing for Hibs.

Gayle was picked up by the Hibees as a free agent in September after Not The Old Firm exclusively revealed the deal was a goer.

The 35-year-old Londoner made a slow start to his Easter Road stint but across his last seven appearances, Gayle has provided three goals and two assists.

He’s been a major factor in Hibs‘ current revival as they went from relegation contenders to European contenders in a matter of weeks.

Gayle netted against St Johnstone on Thursday and also scored the winner in the Edinburgh derby against Hearts at Tynecastle on Boxing Day.

And he admits that his current purple patch of form is giving him second thoughts over hanging up his boots for good at the end of the campaign.

Is Gayle reconsidering his future?

Gayle told reporters earlier in December that this is more likely than not his final season as a professional footballer due to his body slowing down.

But is he now reconsidering? Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Hibs hosting Rangers on Sunday, Gayle said: “Yeah I am still considering it.

“It is something that I need to think about towards the end of the season. I am just working on my game and trying to help the team in which ever way I can for now.

“Obviously the enjoyment I am getting from my football right now would make me consider it. I had similar periods at the end of last season with Derby. It’s what I play football for, to enjoy it.”

Gayle on Hibs fans’ support after derby delight

On scoring against Hearts last week, Gayle said: “I think at the beginning of the season, it was one of my things where if I’d miss a chance, I’d be like ‘as long as I score against Hearts at home’, which was obviously the first one.

“But the boys always told me the better one was at Tynecastle and obviously the away fans were unbelievable. So to score the winner in that was really special.”

Asked if he’s been approached in the streets by fans after the derby winner, Gayle replied: “Quite a few, to be fair. I’m not out and about that much but when I am, people come up to me quietly and shake my hand and say ‘thank you for the goal’. It means a lot.”
