Dwight Gayle reveals Hearts transfer offer and why he chose Hibs

Nothing can endear you to the Hibs support more than turning Hearts down.

It was claimed Hibees striker Kieron Bowie chose the Easter Road move over Tynecastle, although Jambos sources played that down, as per Football Scotland.

While Jamie McGrath, who is heading to Hibs from Aberdeen this summer, was also reportedly being monitored by Hearts.

In the other direction, goalkeeper Zander Clark penned a new Jambos deal, ignoring interest from across the city in doing so.

While midfielder Yan Dhanda was also on the Leith outfit’s radar before opting for the maroon side on a pre-contract switch from Ross County.

But Hibs fans now have another name to rub in their rivals’ faces.

Gayle on Hearts offer before Hibs move

As a free agent after leaving Derby County, Dwight Gayle signed for Hibs in September a few weeks after the season started.

We at Not the Old Firm exclusively revealed Gayle was poised for the switch to the Hibees and he was confirmed a short time after.

At the age of 35 he has been in and out of the side and often used as a sub, but his quality has been on show. No more so than when he scored the winner in a derby victory over Hearts.

To make matters worse for those of a maroon persuasion, it turns out their club had an interest in the former Newcastle and Crystal Palace striker last summer.

Gayle has revealed there was contact with former boss Steven Naismith at the time but it wasn’t the right move for him.

Speaking on Open Goal, he said: “I think I had the opportunity to…I think Naismith mentioned about coming to Hearts at the beginning of the season.

“And it wasn’t the right thing for me at the time. Then I played against Cambridge in a friendly and I think the guys up here watched it and they said they were interested in me coming up.

“I wasn’t sure with my family arrangements but then I spoke to Joe (Newell) again, who I spoke to a bit over the summer.

“I just thought it was a good opportunity for me because obviously I’ve played in most of the leagues down south, and big club and it was too good an opportunity to turn down.”

Gayle on retirement plans

Set to turn 36 early into next season, Gayle has previously admitted retirement is a serious consideration once this campaign is up.

But he then went on to say his enjoyment at Hibs could force him into a rethink.

However, in a fresh update, Gayle has said calling it a day is the most likely option.

“I’m not 100 per cent set on it but it’s something I think is likely to happen,” he admitted.

“My body is starting to feel a bit stiffer than normal.

“Obviously my kids are down south and I want to get back down with them if possible.”
