We continue our season review of looking at some of the most notable players in the Scottish Premiership. On this occasion we examine how Hearts captain Christophe Berra fared in 2018-19.
It was an up and down season for the veteran Hearts skipper. He helped the Tynecastle side to the top of the league at the start of the campaign.
Mainstay in the side
However, a hamstring injury kept the Hearts captain out of action for months. He was a mainstay in the side after that, helping Hearts reach their first Scottish Cup Final for seven years.
Sadly for the player, he was partly to blame for Celtic’s winning goal in that game, as he misjudged a ball which led to Odsonne Edouard scoring the winning goal.
Excellent partnership
Despite that error, Berra can be quite pleased with his season. He formed an at times excellent centre-back partnership with John Souttar.
There has to be a chance that Berra might not feature as often next season. Hearts have signed Livingston centre-back Craig Halkett, and it would not be a shock if the Hearts skipper was rested on occasion next season.
Hopefully when Berra looks back on his season he won’t let the cup final error define his year. He deserves more respect than that.
Should Hearts make some good signings in the summer, they could easily contend for the cup competitions once more. There may be time yet for Berra to make up for his mistake.
