Preece could be set for a permanent return to UK football, with Sunderland reviewing him as a potential goalkeeper coach. Manager Lee Johnson had him coaching the goalkeepers during Sunderland’s pre-season camp in Scotland.

The Sunderland manager said of the former Aberdeen goalkeeper (Chronicle): “There’s a vacancy on the staff and we have interviewed four [coaches], with a couple due to come back for another conversation.

“I’m pretty confident that we will have somebody of quality in that position, and David is one of the contenders.”
