Gary Caldwell leaves Newcastle United after short-lived U23s stint for ex-Partick Thistle boss

Former Partick Thistle manager Gary Caldwell has left his position as Newcastle United U23s head coach, less than one month after being appointed on an interim basis.

Caldwell returned to management for the first time since his Thistle spell ended in 2019 by taking temporary charge of the U23s at former club Newcastle United. His short-term deal has come to a close and the English Premier League side have decided to part ways with the former defender.

A Newcastle United statement reads: “Former Magpies defender Gary Caldwell has left the club’s Academy after completing his scheduled period as interim U23s lead coach. Caldwell stepped in on a short-term basis last month following the departure of Chris Hogg.

“Current assistant Kevin Richardson will take the team for its upcoming fixtures ahead of a permanent appointment being announced shortly. The club would like to thank Gary for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”

Partick Thistle had Caldwell as their manager between 2018-19. The Scottish Championship club avoided relegation in his first season but he left them second-bottom before current manager Ian McCall took charge in 2019. He has since worked in punditry but his Newcastle United gig brought him back to coaching.
