Getting best out of Sam Cosgrove will be key to Aberdeen’s season

Aberdeen return to league action on Saturday looking to gain a measure on the St Mirren side that knocked the Pittodrie club out of the Betfred Cup.

With Aberdeen only three points behind a Celtic team that looks to be badly struggling, they should be aiming to challenge Neil Lennon’s side.

Most important player over last few seasons

However, any challenge could depend on getting the best out of perhaps Aberdeen’s most important player over the past few years – Sam Cosgrove.

Cosgrove has not yet been able to match his excellent record of the last few seasons so far this season. Injury has limited him to only a handful of appearances, and in that time he has scored one goal.

That is a far cry from last season, where the player scored 23 goals before the season was brought to an early end. Cosgrove was similarly prolific in season 18/19, scoring 21 goals.

Injuries might well be an issue

Injuries might well be the reason that the 24-year-old is not prolific as he has been in recent years. However, if he can get a run of games in the team, then the goals might well return.

If the goals do return like they have in the last few seasons, then Aberdeen could have a real chance of catching Celtic in the Premiership table.

Derek McInnes will be hoping that starts for Aberdeen in the next league game against St Mirren. Should Cosgrove find the net, then Aberdeen will have a real chance of taking the three points and getting back on track after some indifferent results.
