Hearts boss Robbie Neilson was surprised by lower league shutdown

Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has disclosed that the decision taken to suspend Scottish football beneath the Championship shocked him.

He has admitted that he didn’t expect the authorities to make such a decision. However, he is confident that with Covid testing introduced the same won’t happen to the Championship.

“We weren’t sure”

“When we got the email through it was a bit of a shock that League One, League Two and below had been postponed. We weren’t sure what was going to happen” he said (The Scotsman).

“We know players will be tested weekly, so clubs will keep on top of things and clubs will have the finance to do it after the grant from the government. So we should see games getting completed” he went on.

Obviously the main goal for Hearts this season is to return to the Premiership. However, they will want to do well in the Scottish Cup once more. It should not be forgotten that they have reached the last two finals in the competition.

Doubts over competition

However, their chances of making it three in a row are in limbo. The competition is currently suspended. The third round ties meant to take place at the end of January have been postponed for now.

Neilson is concerned about when the completion will be played this season. It could well be difficult to fit the games into an already crowded schedule.

“I don’t know where that one will go. By the time lower league teams start up again we are going to be two or three games behind in the schedule and that has to be fitted in somewhere” he mused.
