Kenneth Vargas has hit the headlines after suggesting that he’d like to leave Hearts, potentially as soon as January.
The Costa-Rican forward has been a regular for the Jambos this season after signing a permanent five-year deal in March.
But he hasn’t been delivering in front of goal for Hearts and has garnered a reputation for missing big chances over the past few months.
Vargas has only two goals to show for his efforts this season and has now admitted to ESPN that he isn’t enjoying the standard of Scottish football and wants to move to a league where he is playing against ‘better players’ more regularly.
He also suggested there is some sort of release clause in his contract that could enable him to leave in the upcoming January transfer window if there are clubs interested in signing him.

Key quotes from Kenneth Vargas interview
- “Scotland is a great place, but football-wise they don’t have such a good level, everyone knows that, but I want to go to a better place, I can be in a comfort zone in my club.”
- “There’s a possibility that I could leave in January, it does not depend on me, there is a clause, if a team comes and pays, I am the one who has the final say, but these things are not in my hands. The clause is there. I have no problem negotiating.”
- “I have been told there are clubs interested, there is a possibility that I could leave.”
What are Hearts fans saying?
Many Hearts supporters have understandably been quick to react on social media platform X regarding Vargas’ stunning comments.
One Jambo wrote: “He could start by scoring goals at this sh*** level then.”
This Hearts supporter posted: “Kenny Vargas wants to play at a higher level than Scotland. Fair enough. Scotland is a sh*** standard. However, Kenny Vargas is currently struggling in that sh*** standard. Cheerio wee man. Vamos.”
And this fan said: “If Vargas thinks Scottish football is bad, think about how tough a watch it’s been seeing him trying to play football.”
