Scotland have been spoiled for choice at left-back in recent years.
The national team has had two genuinely world-class options on the left of defence in Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney, playing their club football at two of the biggest teams in the world in Liverpool and Arsenal.
That has meant people like Greg Taylor, performing at the highest level in the Scottish Premiership, haven’t had as much of a chance as they otherwise would.
Aberdeen’s Jack MacKenzie was called up last month so there are other options coming through with captain Robertson now 30.
Hearts‘ James Penrice is another who would surely love to get international recognition after taking to life at Tynecastle very well following his signing from Livingston.

Hearts’ James Penrice tipped for Scotland
Penrice has established himself as the first pick left-back under new Hearts boss Neil Critchley, Andres Salazar out of the picture and Stephen Kingsley sometimes filling in.
The 25-year-old was a standout in the first half of the defeat to Celtic as the Jambos initially fared well at the start of the game.
And he has become a fan favourite because of his displays.
Critchley is now insisting the full-back should be targeting a Scotland call-up.
“I think James has been outstanding,” he told the Edinburgh News. “He is a top boy, really driven, plays with energy and character.
“He’s been fantastic. I think he should have ambitions of looking further. I spoke to him about international recognition.
“I know he’s got that ambition and it’s something he wants to do. I think that’s within his grasp.
“If he keeps playing the way he’s playing, then he will get noticed by people around him.
“Now, he’s up against good competition in his position, but all he can do is concentrate on his performances and keep playing the way he is playing. He has been a major plus since I came here.”
Penrice wows with Hearts displays
Hearts fans were loving Penrice’s performance against Celtic before their team’s collapse in the second half.
He constantly bombed up and down the left flank looking to be an attacking threat and created three very good chances for teammates, the most out of any player on the pitch.
He could have had a trio of assists to his name but for better finishing from those around him.
Penrice’s former Livingston manager David Martindale had already been talking him up and insisted he always knew he would be a hit in Gorgie.
Responding to a discussion about him starting well at Hearts, he said: “I knew he would.
“Great legs, technically very, very good, competes in the air, good in his 1v1 duels and doesn’t mind a tackle. He’s got all of those attributes.”
