A report has claimed that Hearts will owe SPFL rivals Celtic 30% of any transfer involving Aaron Hickey (Scottish Sun).

The young full-back has been the subject of interest from Manchester City in recent weeks (Scottish Daily Mail, backpage,24/09/19).

The most recent report says that the Hoops will land £600k if the Jambos part with the 17-year-old for £2 million.

Hearts need to get a good price for Hickey

Hickey rejected a pro contract at 16 from Celtic in favour of a Tynecastle switch in 2018. He had been a youth player at the Gorgie club previously.

Instead of settling on a compensation fee, the clubs instead agreed on a 30% sell-on clause to be inserted into the teenager’s Hearts deal.

Whilst this may have meant Hearts managed to get Hickey on the cheap initially, it could cost them a big fee now that he is being touted for a seven figure move.

Nobody could’ve predicted such a fast rise to prominence for the full-back. After making his debut against Celtic in May, he started the Scottish Cup final a week later as a 16-year-old.

He’s gone from strength to strength since, with his latest achievement being an Edinburgh derby goal, which sealed a 2-1 win over Hibs. It also made him the youngest scorer in Edinburgh derby history.

Hearts need to make sure they get a good price for Hickey. It’ll be interesting to see whether they demand more for him if any reported interest is formalised, due to the fact some of the cash will be heading to Glasgow it seems.
