Jack Ross’ Hibs side are one of four teams left in the League Cup – and the tournament’s surprising nature has made it anyone’s trophy to lift.

Another dramatic round of fixtures in the domestic cup ensured that it would be Ross’ men, St Johnstone, St Mirren and Livingston competing the semi-finals, big hitters like Aberdeen, Celtic and Rangers all out, the latter eliminated by Ross’ former side St Mirren on Wednesday.

The Hibees are now arguably favourites for the trophy, being the biggest club left in the League Cup. But Ross says all four teams will fancy their chances, Hibs set to play St Johnstone next month in the last four.

“I think recent history shows that we have at least one of Celtic and Rangers at this stage in the tournament, if not both of them,” Ross said. “It’s an unusual occurrence to have neither so whenever that happens, the teams left see it as their chances of winning it increasing.

“We are no different to the other three teams left. All teams will have that ambition to win a trophy. I’m conscious that every day takes me a game further from when I was a player.

“Your mindset changes a little bit as a manager and you can be a bit more about pragmatic about it. All four teams left in the competition will view it as a realistic chance to win the trophy.”

As the country enters a Christmas week like no other, Ross says Hibs have plans in place to look after player welfare at this time, with protocols and tier systems making it harder for players and staff alike to see family this year.

“I speak with the players a lot in terms of the dialogue I have with them outside the professional aspect of it,” Ross explained ahead of Saturday’s Premiership match with Dundee United.

“I think your interest in player’s welfare is important to how you get the most out your group. We understand that players are in different positions at this time of year and some are staying further away from home.

“Our interest is making sure they are ok and making sure they have arrangements. But we all know the sacrifices we have to make. As long as they are comfortable with they are and are happy and content, we’re ok.”
