He’s been out of action since January, but Ryan Porteous is now one step closer to a return to Hibs’ senior side.
The defender captained Hibs’ colts team in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup. He played the full 90 minutes against League Two side Elgin City.
It was a brilliant match, but the youthful Hibs side eventually lost out on the night, with Elgin coming away from the match 4-3 victors.
Porteous played in defensive midfield for Hibs
Interestingly, Porteous wasn’t placed in central defence. Instead he played in the CDM role. His first start in any sort of competitive action since January got off to the perfect start, netting after just three minutes.
A topsy-turvy game was eventually settled in the last minute when Matthew Cooper scored the seventh goal of the night.
In terms of Hibs’ senior side, the big thing to take from this was the amount of senior players who got vital minutes on the park.
Porteous played the full 90 minutes, whilst Vykintas Slivka, Fraser Murray and Oli Shaw all featured against Elgin.
Poretous’ return though will be massive. Hibs only have Adam Jackson, Paul Hanlon and Darren McGregor as centre-back options right now. Paul Heckingbottom will be keen to get the 20-year-old fully fit, so that he can provide competition for places in his starting XI.
His return can’t be too far off though. The fact he has now played a 90 minute game shows Porteous is almost back at full fitness.
