Hibs’ Paul McGinn watched his brother score an unexpected goal, his youngest sibling sign a new deal with Aston Villa before then notching a thunderous strike himself.
Now the right-back is aiming for League Cup progression tonight as the Hibees travel to Alloa. It’s been a good spell for the McGinn family, the two eldest brothers, Paul and Stephen, doing well at Hibs while John’s signed a deal until 2025 with Aston Villa.

The Hibs star has been delighted with this news on the family front. What’s more impressive is that he’s currently leading the family goal chart this season, but his defensive capabilities take precedent.
“It’s been a pretty good week for the McGinn’s,” said the Hibs right-back. “Stephen was able to get his goal and John signed his new deal at Aston Villa and also got a penalty late on (against Wolves).
“We managed to hear about that on the pitch and then I sneaked another goal – so it’s been a good week! Being an attacking full-back I should have scored more goals but most of the time I’ve been back at corners and set pieces so it’s probably about right my average.

“But it’s not something I beat myself up too much about. The modern-day full-backs are expected to put attacking stats on the board. First and foremost however it’s about defending and making sure that winger is not getting behind you so I don’t think people should get carried away with the goals.”
Now a tie away to Championship Alloa awaits Hibs in the League Cup. While big favourites to progress to the semi-final stage, McGinn is aware that this will be a tricky task, despite Hibs scoring seven without reply in their last two matches.
“Confidence is massive in football and if you are winning games and keeping clean sheets then you are going to be confident,” explained McGinn. “So it’s good to have another game so quick but from what I hear Alloa have been playing pretty well.

“The pressure is on us and a lot of fans are expecting us to go there and win. For Alloa it’s one that they can look forward to and get a free hit. We know they have good players so it must be a good feeling for them.
“I’ve not seen any of the highlights from when they beat Hearts but from the result they must have played well. We’re not too far away from Hampden so as long as we get through, I’m not really caring about the scoreline.”
