Jamie McGrath on key Aberdeen trait that helped them fight back vs Celtic

It was the Premiership’s game of the weekend and had been given the big build-up given Aberdeen’s start to the season.

But when Celtic raced into a two-goal lead, it looked like it was going to be the same sort of depressing outcome as we’ve been getting for decades whenever a side looks like putting up a sustained challenge to the Old Firm.

But the Dons, who had been accused of not having faced a proper test yet, showed that they ARE able to stand up when put through an examination and launched a brilliant late comeback to draw the game.

It means they stay level with the Hoops at the top of the table and the talk of them challenging for the title can go on at least a while longer.

McGrath details how Aberdeen launched Celtic comeback

We’ve already heard from Jimmy Thelin about the Aberdeen half time team talk from the Swede that inspired the turnaround.

But Jamie McGrath has his own take on what it took from the players. While they may have had fire in the belly, they also had ice in the brain.

The midfielder said: “When you go two down, you could start arguing with yourselves, but I never felt us get into that situation.

“We remained calm, the gaffer settled us down at half-time, tweaked a few things and we showed great character. I thought the character of the team was unbelievable because that’s the first time we’ve faced being a goal or two down.

“On another time, I have been part of teams where it would have become a third or a fourth, but I never felt that. We had to weather the storm at times but you will alway have that at Celtic Park.

“Staying in the game is the big thing because, if we do that, we know we’ll score. To get the first goal back was big and once we did that, we got a really good foothold in the game and looked dangerous. You have to give credit to the substitutes because they came on and really changed the game, too.”

What Graeme Shinnie said about Aberdeen half-time talk

Thelin gave his take on his own team talk but what about from a player’s point of view? Shinnie says the Swede was able to calm things down, with some help from him too.

The captain said: “He’s very calm. He doesn’t let the emotion of the game take over his decisions. He tries to stay calm during the game and at half-time, so he can make the right decisions. That’s the style that he’s got, which is important in football. You can’t get caught up in the emotions of football because you can then make some wrong decisions. He’s very level-headed.

“But it was a mix of everything to be honest. Everyone was chatting at half-time. We had to calm it down. Everyone’s emotions were high, but we calmed it down, we spoke and we galvanised. We came out a lot better in the second half.

“We wanted to go out on the front foot. We wanted to turn it around. We wanted to do that as quickly as we could. We needed a couple of changes just to inject that bit of urgency and pace into the team and I thought it worked really well.”
