It is clear that Jimmy Thelin does not give much way and will continue in that way.

The Aberdeen boss could have been forgiven if he was seen doing cartwheels on the side of the pitch as his side beat Rangers to move nine points clear of the Ibrox men.

Crucially, it also keeps them level with Celtic at the top of the table after the champions also won again against Dundee.

The Dons continue to pass test after test and prove they are well up for the fight as people wonder if they are title challengers.

Jimmy Thelin answers Aberdeen title question

But one man who refuses to get drawn into that particular debate is the manager himself.

The Swede is nothing if not pragmatic and clearly doesn’t want to be seen to getting ahead of himself. Instead he is saying all the right things about taking things as they come.

While others think Thelin will have that belief inside of him, publicly he keeps playing it cool.

It was the same last night despite another monumental result weeks after fighting back to draw at Parkhead.

He told BBC Sportsound: “No. It’s still early, and we know that, and that’s why we have to stay focused.

“For us, once again, it is about taking three points and we take it game by game. The fans can enjoy today but for us it is about how we recover and have new energy for Saturday.

“You cannot expect things, you have to fight. You have to find different things sometimes and it is the small things in tight games. We fight together and we know if we get the opportunity we have to go for it.

“I am optimistic and positive. We have to support our players and they also have to enjoy tonight then tomorrow we go into the next game.”

Thelin hails Aberdeen key trait

Aberdeen have blown teams away at times this season with attacking players like Pape Gueye, Kevin Nisbet, Topi Keskinen, Jamie McGrath and Shayden Morris all contributing at the top end of the park.

But grafters like Graeme Shinnie, Sivert Nilsen, Nicky Devlin and Jack MacKenzie have also been massive parts as the team shows they can grind out results when needed.

That Celtic draw was the epitome of that and they also fought back from 2-1 down to beat Hearts.

Thelin is over the moon with the mental strength his team is displaying.

He added: “Everyone is pushing each other at Cormack Park and Pittodrie to give each other positive energy. It is still a long-term project and we still have to get better.

“It was an emotional game. A lot of things happened today. There was different momentum. Our first half was one of our better ones and our intensity was really strong.

“In the second half they had more momentum but we stayed in the game and stayed focused. We showed calmness even when things were not going exactly where we wanted but again the players who came on played their part. We find a way and I am so happy with the character of the team.

“The atmosphere in Pittodrie. Football is about emotions and the mental capacity, the strength of the team and trying to push each other. It’s a lot of things and I’m so happy that we are doing a lot of those things quite well.”

“No. It’s still early, and we know that, and that’s why we have to stay focused.

“Now it’s a semi-final, we have to recover and focus on that one.”
