John McGinn is hopeful that Steve Clarke sticks around with Scotland for the long haul amid links to the vacant manager’s job at Celtic.

The Scots boss has guided the nation to its first major tournament since 1998, Scotland set to compete at Euro 2020 this summer. It’s resulted in links elsewhere, Clarke connected with taking over as Celtic manager after Neil Lennon’s exit.

Clarke has distanced himself from rumours while SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell is hopeful that the current manager will guide the nation to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. McGinn says statements like Maxwell’s are reassuring for the players.

He said (Go Radio): “First and foremost, I’m not surprised he’s been connected and linked with the job. He’s a brilliant manager and says it how it is. He’s obviously been with the top clubs across England and up here.

“He did a brilliant job with Kilmarnock and as a team it was probably slow initially as to how we had set up under him, but the more and more we got used to how it worked and the style of play it certainly has benefitted us going forward.

“The success is really a platform and he is as hungry as us players to go and carry that on, so it’s nice to hear that there is going to be a bit of continuity (for the Euros) if someone is going to nab him but hopefully Ian Maxwell and the SFA can keep him for a while yet.”
