Kenny McLean is highly thought of at St Mirren– and he’s proven he still holds the Buddies in high regard after selling Norwich City kid Akin Famewo on a Paisley switch.

Famewo will join the Buddies on a six-month loan deal. He’ll be another option at the back as Jim Goodwin looks to enhance his side, currently battling for Premiership survival.

Capable of playing at centre-back or left-back, Famewo said in St Mirren’s announcement of his signing that McLean was a big factor behind his move.

“I didn’t know a great lot about Scottish football but I know Kenny McLean and he’s told me a bit about it,” he said. “I spoke to him about the move as he has links to the club and I was really keen to join.

“The manager has been very welcoming and I’m looking forward to working with him. I’m very excited as it’s a great opportunity in a great league.”

Good advice

In terms of people to get advice from, Famewo won’t get much better than McLean. Having risen through St Mirren’s academy and starred for their first-team, he knows all about the standards his Canary teammate will have to reach.

Famewo’s previous clubs include Grimsby and Luton Town. He could be in line to make his debut against Broxburn Athletic when Premiership teams return from their winter breaks.

McLean may have did his former club a turn here. If Famewo goes onto become a Buddies success, perhaps a former Paisley man will be thanked for getting him there.

For now though, Famewo will just be looking to hit the ground running at his new club.
