Tommy Wright says Middlesbrough loanee Zach Hemming ‘came up trumps’ for Kilmarnock in their Premier Sports Cup penalty shootout win over Greenock Morton.
Kyle Connell’s stoppage-time equaliser sent the group Group G match to penalties, goalkeeper Hemming saving a few in the 4-3 success. Kilmarnock’s bonus point means they can potentially win the section with a victory over Stranraer, providing Clyde fail to beat Morton. Wright’s side were forced to forfeit their opening match with East Kilbride 3-0.
Wright said of the Middlesbrough talent: “I’m really pleased how Zach came up trumps. The save he makes with his wrong hand on the left was incredible. He kept us in it because we missed a couple of penalties.
“We’ve a chance to go through and that’s all down to the character of the players. A win won’t guarantee it for us against Stranraer. We might need to win by a number of goals. I think we got what we deserved. Kyle has an eye for goal and he took it well.
“The player went to the end and kept probing. It’s always tough when a team defends so deep and defends well. We should have won the game. We win on penalties and that’s the best we can do.”
