Kilmarnock can feel really pleased with their efforts against Celtic even if the result wasn’t in their favour.
Killie were so unlucky to draw a blank and lose 2-0 as they had far more shots on goal than the league leaders.
Derek McInnes was proud of his team though did concede they didn’t deserve to win because they didn’t take their chances.
He also answered whether he thought Celtic’s Reo Hatate could have been sent off with his side already trailing by two goals to nil.
Liam Donnelly avoids red for Kilmarnock vs Celtic
Another challenge highlighted as a potential red card one was home midfielder Liam Donnelly’s on visiting goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
After the ball was played back to the Dane, Donnelly shuts him down aggressively as he goes to try and play it.
Replays show him shoving his forearm towards Schmeichel and only just catching him.
That’s why former referee Dermot Gallagher thought it didn’t warrant a red and the referee was correct to flash the yellow.
But former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told Sky Sports: “I think he should go for that. That’s intent to smash him across the face. That’s why Schmeichel is so angry because he knows, if you watch his arm, you talk about that clenched fist and he pushes it across.
“I think that ‘s really naughty and he knows exactly what he’s doing there.”
Asked about the fact Donnelly only catches Schmeichel low down, he added: “Yeah, it’s just because he’s smaller. If he’s any taller he’s catching Schmeichel right across the face. He’d knock him out, probably break his jaw if he catches him.”
McInnes on Hatate challenge vs Kilmarnock
Hatate’s challenge divided opinion with sky pundits Kris Boyd and James McFadden disagreeing, the former Killie striker thinking it was a red.
McInnes gave his take post-match and said: “At the time I thought it was high but I didn’t think there was a lot of force in it.
“When it goes to VAR, I’m sure the pictures wouldn’t have looked good.
“In terms of actual force, I’m not sure it was exactly a red card, to be honest.
“Honestly we would take that because I think we have been victims of that. But sometimes you don’t get these wee breaks against teams like Celtic.
“I didn’t think there was a lot of force but I did think it was a bad tackle.”
