Leigh Griffiths will have contract talks with Celtic as the likes of Aberdeen eye a potentially stunning transfer for the Scotland international.
The forward has scored six goals for Celtic this season but has netted 122 over 257 appearances in green and white. But he has been linked with a move to Aberdeen, where current teammate Scott Brown will become player-coach to new manager Stephen Glass, recent reports suggesting a one-year option was in his current deal.
Celtic have to activate that, otherwise Griffiths would be free to make a move to Aberdeen for nothing, Hibs another team mentioned with his name. Interim manager John Kennedy has provided a contract update amid Aberdeen interest, confirming the one-year activation clause.
He said: “Like a lot of players’ contracts, the last year can sometimes be an option year. You find that players might sign a three-year deal with an extra year option at the end of that and that’s where Leigh is at.
“It’s one of these decisions that will be need to be made. Those discussions will take place between Leigh and the club and will remain private until it’s decided. It’s something we will need to think about going forward. I can’t say too much more on it.”
