Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest player of all-time and is easily the world’s most famous number 10. It was 11 years ago today that Messi played with that iconic number for the first time in a match against Hibs.
Aged 32 now, Messi has scored a mind-boggling 603 goals in 687 games for Barcelona. The start of his journey in the number 10 shirt though started at Murrayfield against Hibs.
He started as he meant to go on.
Messi destroyed Hibs
It was always going to be hard for Mixu Paatelainen’s men to match the Catalan giants’ star quality. If any Hibees were in doubt over how good Messi was and why he’d been handed the number 10, they weren’t doubting it by half-time.
Messi orchestrated a masterclass of free-flowing football. He was the shining light throughout a 45 minute display.
Always dribbling and always displaying excellent technique, he scored once and created goals for both Eidur Gudjohnsen and Pedro. Unplayable comes to mind when thinking about his performance.
The Argentine contributed heavily to Hibs being 4-0 down in just over 25 minutes. Pep Guardiola hooked him at half-time, much to the delight of the Hibees defence.
An awe-inspiring performance from the Argentine magician left Hibs dumbfounded. It’s safe to say Hibs haven’t come up against anyone better since.
