Livingston boss Gary Holt has hailed Aston Villa stopper Matija Sarkic after he was selected for the Montenegro squad.
The 22-year-old has been capped at U21 level but has never played for his nation’s senior side. He’ll be in with a shout this month when Montenegro take on Belarus and England.
Holt has praised him for this achievement but insists the goalkeeper can’t afford to rest on his laurels.
He told the Daily Record (page 06/11/19): “It’s brilliant for Matija. He thoroughly deserves the call-up but he needs to push on now.”
Sarkic has earned his reward after Livingston breakthrough
Sarkic has had to wait patiently for his chance at Livingston following his loan switch from Aston Villa, but he now looks likely to remain as Livi number one.
After being limited to cup games, Holt field Sarkic against Celtic in what was a Premiership baptism of fire. The Montenegrin handled it well, notching an assist and keeping a clean sheet in a historic 2-0 win.
Since then he has played every game for Livingston as he looks to build up his senior CV. It has led to his nation taking notice and selecting him for duty.
I’ll be a proud moment for the Villa loanee if he does get a chance to play for his country, a sign that his development is progressing well in West Lothian.
