Manchester United amongst clubs paying tribute to former Scotland boss Tommy Docherty

A host of clubs including Manchester United have paid tribute to late Scotland boss Tommy Docherty after his sad passing.

The Scottish Football Hall of Fame inductee passed away aged 92 last week. He had a lengthy playing career, featuring for Shettleston Juniors, Celtic, Preston North End, Arsenal and Chelsea, before taking in managerial stints with Scotland and Manchester United and many others.

Plenty of tributes have been paid to him, Manchester United being one of the clubs to do so. He won the FA Cup and Second Division title during a five-year stint at Old Trafford during the 1970s.

The Red Devils said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tommy Docherty, who led us to FA Cup victory in 1977 with a thrilling, attacking team in the best traditions of Manchester United. Everyone at the club sends sincere condolences to Tommy’s loved ones.

Another club paying tribute were Preston North End, who Docherty played over 300 times for during his playing days: “Everyone at Preston North End is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player and manager Tommy Docherty, who made over 300 appearances for the club. Our thoughts are with Tommy’s loved ones at this sad time.”

Altrincham were another club out the several who paid their respects to Docherty, the Robins the final club Docherty managed during the 1987/88 season: “Altrincham FC are saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Docherty, who managed the Robins during the 1987/88 season. This was his final managerial role. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. RIP.”

Docherty won seven of 12 matches in charge of Scotland between 1971-72 and represented the country at two World Cups as a player. He will be remembered as one of the game’s great characters.
