Former Motherwell and Wolves man Maurice Ross has been sacked by Notts County just five weeks into his stint as assistant manager at the National League club.

The former Scotland international – who featured for clubs like Wolves in his playing career – left his role as a first-team coach at Motherwell earlier this year as former manager Stephen Robinson departed and Graham Alexander arrived. The 40-year-old was brought in a month ago to boost promotion hopes, signing a long-term deal.

But it has not worked out as planned, the former Motherwell and Wolves figure sacked after a bust-up with a player. Ross leaves Ian Burchnall’s management team in difficult circumstances, having been involved in a bust-up with an unnamed player during a draw with Altrincham on Saturday.

Notts County’s brief statement reads: “Assistant head coach Maurice Ross has this afternoon left the club with immediate effect. We will be making no further comment.”
