Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is hoping that he will know the futures of key players Gary Mackay-Steven and Graeme Shinnie before January.

Both will be free to speak to clubs in January, as their contracts expire in the summer. The Scottish internationals are key players at Pittodrie, and McInnes will be keen to keep both his star men.

In an ideal world, a decision will be made before the winter window, but McInnes will not force the decision upon them.

Speaking about the pair, McIness told the Evening Express: “Both Shinnie and Mackay-Steven have indicated the potential for staying is something they are seriously thinking about. Havingknown the lads now for a long time I have got to trust that is what it is.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“I would hope both of them would let me know by January because that would help me forward plan. I think myself and the club aredeserving of that.”

Can Shinnie and Mackay-Stevn refuse a lucrative offer?

Also according to the Evening Express, the Dons have tabled an offer to Shinnie, which would make him one of the club’s biggest earners. This is a situation the 27-year old is no stranger to. He found himself in this position at Inverness, before singing for the Dons. If another step up presented itself, could the Aberdeen skipper really turn it down?

He’s entering the peak of his career. If he is going to move to a bigger side, he has to move now. He has achieved great things at Aberdeen, but there are many things Shinnie has to take into account in what will be his biggest career decision.

For Mackay-Steven though, it perhaps makes more sense to stay in the Granite City. He’s back to playing regularly, something which evaded him during a spell at Celtic. The former Dundee United winger is at a club where he is appreciated and can fully express his ability. Despite this, his head could be turned by a lucrative move down south.

Aberdeen won’t want to lose either player but, if big money comes calling for them, they won’t be able to stop them from leaving Pittodrie.
