Michael Stewart has advised Motherwell to recruit their next manager from the Championship.
The Steelmen are looking for a new boss after Stuart Kettlewell resigned from his position on Monday citing the personal abuse he and his family have been subjected to.
Kettlewell made it clear the abuse reached the point where his family did not want to attend Motherwell games anymore.
The 40-year-old leaves Motherwell sitting 5th in the Premiership but with just one win from nine games, their last two being back-to-back defeats to bottom club St Johnstone.

Michael Stewart on next Motherwell manager choices
Not The Old Firm have listed 11 potential candidates for the Motherwell vacancy which includes the likes of Neil Lennon, Billy Davies and Tam Courts.
These are all managers out of work at the moment and would be attractive to Motherwell from a financial point of view.
But Premier Sports pundit Stewart reckons the Fir Park club should be casting their net in the Championship and named four men who could be considered.
He named John McGlynn, Scott Brown, Kris Doolan and Callum Davidson – Falkirk, Ayr United, Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park managers respectively – as bosses in with a shout.
Stewart told The Scottish Football Social Club podcast: “I think if you look into the Championship, if you look at a lot of the managers in there, John McGlynn at Falkirk for example, Scott Brown at Ayr, Kris Doolan at Partick Thistle.
“These guys have done pretty good jobs in the positions they’re in in the top half of the Championship. Callum Davidson at Queen’s Park. I mean seriously, what a job he did at St Johnstone.
“He’s gone into Queen’s Park and steadied the ship because they looked like relegation fodder last season. Now he’s got them in and around challenging for the play-offs. He’s turned things around a lot there.
“So there you go, there’s middle to top of the Championship. Ian Murray, he’s got to be in with a shout as well. So all these guys, domestic managers, why not?
“There’s four or five guys who would surely be in with a shout.”
Who should Motherwell go for?
From the five mentioned by Stewart, Ian Murray would be the cheapest given he has been out of work since leaving Raith Rovers in August.
Murray was linked with the St Johnstone job before the appointment of Simo Valakari and would jump at the chance of managing a Premiership club who still have a shot at qualifying for Europe.
Kris Doolan and Callum Davidson are likely to be persuaded more easily than John McGlynn and Scott Brown.
McGlynn has Falkirk sitting top of the Championship by two points and the club are clear favourites to earn back-to-back promotions.
While Brown’s Ayr are just behind in second with promotion automatically or via the play-offs a huge possibility for the former Scotland midfielder.
McGlynn’s CV stands out above the rest but would he really consider leaving the Bairns at this juncture of the season if approached by Motherwell?
