Dundee United boss Micky Mellon has stated the target that he has in mind for his side when they begin their Scottish Cup campaign against Partick Thistle this weekend.

Mellon hasn’t gone as far as to state that he thinks that the Tannadice side will win the competition. However, he feels that the team can do well in the competition. Mellon plans to play youngsters when possible in the tournament.

“We want to do as well as we can, that is the same for every competition we enter” he said (The Courier).

“The only target”

“The only target is to keep improving the team and looking to try and get young players in the first-team and making sure they are consistent enough to keep getting us results.

“That is the plan to keep the club moving forward and to get us better and better” Mellon continued.

United have not won the Scottish Cup since 2010, when they defeated Ross County in the final. They last reached the cup final in 2014, losing to St Johnstone.

Won’t take opponents lightly

Mellon has disclosed that he won’t be taking Partick Thistle lightly, even though the Firhill side play two divisions below the Premiership outfit. He has had the Glasgow team scouted on numerous occasions, and he doesn’t think the match will be easy.

“We have seen them as many times as we possibly could, and we had them watched again on Tuesday night.

“It will be a tough game. It is the Scottish Cup and every team will be scrapping and fighting because they want to do well. Regardless of who you play it is going to be a tough game” Mellon concluded.
