Motherwell confirm signing of 20-year-old with ‘unlimited potential’

Motherwell have confirmed the long-awaited signing of Irish midfielder Ross Tierney from Bohemians on a three-and-a-half-year deal, as Steelmen boss Graham Alexander hailed Tierney’s “unlimited” potential.

The Fir Park side had been expected to confirm Tierney’s signing for a while and finally announced his move to Scotland after Bohemians’ season came to an end.

After impressing this season with Bohs, earning a nomination for PFA Ireland’s Young Player of the Year award, Tierney becomes the latest player to move to the Scottish Premiership from the Emerald Isle.

“We’re really looking forward to Ross joining the club in January,” Alexander said after Tierney’s move to Lanarkshire was confirmed.

“He’s a young player who has had a couple of excellent seasons with Bohemians and his national squad.

“His attributes will fit in perfectly with how we play and his potential is unlimited at this stage of his career.

“He’s already met the squad and is excited about the move. We mirror those feelings.”

Tierney has made 67 appearances for the League of Ireland side, scoring 12 goals and registering 13 assists – including goals against Icelandic side Stjarnan and Luxembourg’s Dudelange in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.

The midfielder also has five caps for the Republic of Ireland’s under-21 side scoring against Australia on his debut in June as his impressive rise caught the eye of the nat

“Delighted to sign for Motherwell and can’t wait to get going in front of yous lot,” Tierney said in a brief clip shared by the Fir Park side on their official Twitter account ahead of his move becoming official on January 1.

That could see him handed a debut away to St. Mirren 24 hours later in Motherwell’s final game before the winter break.
