In terms of a January signing, Motherwell have surely bagged one of the biggest names this window.

The Steelmen have announced the capture of Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack, who was at the Fir Park club between 2006-2008. It’s a massive signing for the Steelmen, and if it works out, McCormack will almost certainly push them away from relegation trouble.

Motherwell fans were obviously delighted with their club’s statement of intent, and took to Twitter to express how pleased they were with the signing.

McCormack could still compete with Scotland’s elite

Whilst club connections have no doubt played there part, many will wonder what other offers McCormack had on his plate. Was a move back to Fir Park really the best he could do?

Nearly every team in the SPFL would have bitten Aston Villa’s hand off for the forward, so for Motherwell to land him is a great coup by the club. Despite not being at the peak of his powers anymore, he is still a more than capable striker.

Teams like Hibs and Aberdeen are calling out for creative inspiration, and McCormack would have delivered that. His technical ability is superb, and he scores goals with ease when he’s on form.

Motherwell won’t care about any of that now though, McCormack is their man. The Steelmen have been crying out for a goalscorer, and they’ve probably exceeded expectations in terms of who they thought they could bring in. The chance to bring multi-million pound strikers to Fir Park doesn’t happen very often.

If McCormack can get firing, Motherwell will stay up, no questions asked. He gives Motherwell the edge in games against the leagues poorer sides. The Aston Villa loanee may just be about to save The Fir Park side’s season.
