New Kilmarnock Head of Football Operations James Fowler says he ‘loved’ his time at Sunderland following his Stadium of Light departure.

Fowler served under Jack Ross as his assistant during the recently appointed Hibs boss’ spell at the club. After Ross was sacked, Fowler took over as caretaker manager.

He admits that dealing with a ‘huge’ club like Sunderland is something that will benefit him as he progresses his football career.

He told the Kilmarnock Standard: “I loved that experience there, the club is huge and the demands are huge. The club is going through a bit of a transitional period compared to where it used to be which meant there was a lot of work behind the scenes to do.

“I loved living in the North East of England, but the lure of coming back to Kilmarnock was too much and I felt the time was right to take this opportunity.”

Fowler is a Kilmarnock legend

It will have been a testing experience for Fowler at Sunderland. After League One play-off final heartbreak, the Black Cats had a sticky start to this season which led to Ross’ departure.

Fowler’s bound to have learned lots from this. He’s now back at a club though where the fans quite rightly adore him.

The new Head of Football Operations spent 17 years of his playing career at Rugby Park, making over 400 appearances and lifting the Scottish League Cup for the club.

He’ll now look to thrive off the park in Ayrshire, just like he did on it when he represented Killie as a player.
