Ryan Fraser has been out injured ever since the last set of Scotland internationals – which is why a few eyebrows were raised on his shock return to Newcastle United action.
The Scotsman missed last month’s Euro 2020 qualification match against Serbia due to a small muscle tear. Due back for Newcastle United’s November match against Chelsea, he hadn’t been seen since.
Little had come in the way of fitness updates on Fraser before Newcastle United had an outbreak of Covid-19 thrown into the mix. With a squad getting back to peak sharpness following this, Fraser was reintroduced.
No gradual return was had for Fraser as he went straight into Newcastle’s starting XI away to Leeds United on Wednesday night. It wasn’t a happy return though, Leeds routing the Toon 5-2.
Fraser lasted 75 minutes to his credit and notched an assist during the heavy defeat. Steve Bruce’s side looked on course for a point with the game at 2-2 but soon capitulated, Leeds scoring three times inside the last 13 minutes.
It’s a boost for the Scotland international, who will look to prove he is deserving of a Scotland spot at Euro 2020 next summer. While this may already be a certainty given his ability, he’ll need to work hard to nail down a starting spot.
He’ll next have a chance to build on this return when Newcastle face Fulham in Premier League action on Saturday evening.
