Aberdeen have confirmed the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on a season-long loan deal.

The 21-year-old has also penned a new contract with Newcastle United as he heads north to join Stephen Glass’ team, who were eliminated from the Europa Conference League by Qarabag on Thursday. Longstaff is highly-rated by his parent English Premier League club and the move was announced by manager Steve Bruce earlier today.

Glass’ men return to league action against Ross County on Sunday. A statement reads: “Aberdeen Football Club has this afternoon agreed a deal for Matty Longstaff. The dynamic 21-year-old midfielder will join the Club on a season-long loan from English Premiership side, Newcastle United, subject to international clearance.

“The highly thought of player made his debut for Newcastle United in August 2019 and scored a memorable goal against Manchester United later that season, earning him the Premier League ‘Goal of Month’ accolade.

“Matty earned his first international call up to the England under 20 side in November 2019 and following the expiration of contract, signed a new two-year deal with Newcastle United in the summer of 2020. Manager Stephen Glass is pleased to be adding a young talent to the group, someone who he believes will make the squad stronger.”
