Partick Thistle have completed the emergency loan signing of US youth international goalkeeper Aaron Cervantes from Rangers.
The 19-year-old joined Rangers from partner club Orange County SC in California and goes straight into the matchday squad for this afternoon’s clash with Airdrie in the Scottish Cup.
Backup keeper Mason McCready is cup-tied after featuring for Gala Fairydean Rovers earlier in the competition, and with on-loan Harry Stone returning Hearts, Thistle were left short of options.
Jags boss Ian McCall thanked Rangers for their “assistance” as he welcomed the American keeper to Firhill on a short-term basis, saying: “Our thanks go to Rangers for loaning us Aaron on a seven-day emergency loan.
“With Harry Stone being recalled by Hearts earlier this window and Mason McCready cup-tied we were short in the goalkeeping area. Aaron will join up with us and go into the squad for tomorrow’s game.”
Cervantes is yet to be involved with the Rangers first-team but has appeared in the Lowland League for the Rangers B side under David McCallum.
The American has represented his country at youth level and is highly rated on the other side of the Atlantic having featured for Orange County at first-team level in the USL.
Partick Thistle number one Jamie Sneddon will take his regular place between the sticks this afternoon against Airdrie in the Scottish Cup but Thistle should have an able deputy to call on should something happen.
