Preston North End head coach Frankie McAvoy has hailed the signing of Ali McCann from St Johnstone as ‘magnificent’ for the English Championship club.

The midfielder bossed European matches against Galatasaray and LASK last month, attracting English interest after St Johnstone’s League Cup and Scottish Cup triumphs last term. McCann left in an 11th-hour Deadline Day move, joining Preston for a fee of around £1.2 million plus add-ons. Captain Jason Kerr has joined Wigan.

McAvoy said:  “It’s magnificent, it’s a brilliant signing for Preston North End. He’s one of the best young players in Scotland. He’s done remarkably well playing at St Johnstone. He’s a full international with Northern Ireland so we’re absolutely delighted to get the deal done.

Meanwhile, Finnish striker Eetu Vertainen has signed for St Johnstone on a two-year deal. He said: “I’m pleased that this deal has been agreed, and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been in Perth for a couple of weeks, but due to rules and regulations of the transfer, there is paperwork that needs to be completed before I’ll be available for selection.

“The Football Club has dealt with everything in a professional manner, and hopefully, that can all be completed in the next few days, and I can then look forward to playing for St Johnstone. I’ve been to the European games, and the atmosphere inside McDiarmid Park has been incredible. The Saints supporters are very special.”
