Pundits clash on Slobodan Rubezic Aberdeen red as Tony Watt ‘knew what he was doing’

Plenty has been said on Slobodan Rubezic’s red card for Aberdeen against Motherwell at the weekend.

From Dons boss Jimmy Thelin suggesting the player lacked ’emotional control’ to former referee Dermot Gallagher backing up the decision to send Rubezic off.

Aberdeen already trailed the Steelmen 1-0 but being reduced to ten men made things even more difficult for them – especially when they conceded a second minutes later.

It led to a tenth straight game without a win for the Dons and five defeats in a row.

The Swede admitted he had yet to see the incident back but his response hinted at being slightly irked with Rubezic.

While Gallagher insisted the Montenegrin had given the referee a decision to make.

But not everyone is in agreement with the red card call.

Watt ‘knew what he was doing’ for Rubezic red

Well striker Watt had antagonised the centre-back, responding verbally as the pair clashed in front of the Fir Park dugouts.

Rubezic acted angrily and physically, bumping his head in towards him and also shoving him in the stomach.

Watt hit the deck and Nick Walsh branded the red card.

Cammy Bell admits Watt knew what he was doing in getting Rubezic sent off but still feels the red card was warranted.

Speaking on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene: “I think first and foremost, Tony Watt has played his part in this. I think he knows what he’s doing, trying to wind up the Aberdeen player.

“Yes, the Aberdeen player gets himself involved and I don’t think he needs to. There’s no danger going on in the game.

“I feel as if there’s a double movement there towards Tony Watt’s head.

“Is there much contact? I’m unsure but I still think that double movement is what has allowed Nick Walsh to give the red card.

“What the Aberdeen player does is he puts his team in a position that he doesn’t need to. He doesn’t need to get involved.”

Opposing view on Aberdeen red

Marvin Bartley disagreed and said: “Tony Watt has done what anyone would do in that situation. It’s a game of football, there’s three points up for grabs. He’s done nothing wrong.

“Rubezic has been silly in terms of getting involved. But this whole ‘double movement’ I’m hearing about…for me there is zero contact.

“He’s lifted his head up…yes. Has he gone towards Tony Watt? Potentially. He’s pushed him in the stomach which has sent him down.

“But I don’t think it is a red card. I really, really don’t. It’s not enough for me.”
