Pundit’s Hibs relegation verdict as David Gray given credit for what he did vs Celtic

Hibs are back on the bottom of the Premiership after losing to Celtic.

The mood around Easter Road had lifted a little after a battling draw with Aberdeen, featuring two stoppage time equalisers, and then a convincing win over Motherwell.

But it was always going to be tough at Celtic Park and despite a decent performance the Hibees couldn’t take their chances and let in three at the other end.

With rivals Hearts beating Dundee, the two capital clubs traded places once again and it’s the men from Leith sitting 12th again.

Despite that, there were plenty of positives to take from the showing against the champions and league leaders, and manager David Gray is still adamant Hibs can get out of their current position.

Gray praised for ‘brave’ Hibs approach

Hibs found themselves 1-0 down after just five minutes but had themselves had already had THREE chances to open the scoring.

The most obvious was when Mykola Kuharevich went through one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel but couldn’t find the finish, not the only time he was guilty of profligacy.

The Hibees continued to go for goal throughout the game and even though they drew a blank, Gray has been praised for being brave at the home of the champions.

Neil McCann told BBC Sportscene: “Hibs are brave, they’re always putting bodies forward. I thought they did it brilliantly, they were taking risks.

“The amount of chances they got at Celtic Park, you don’t see it.

“Compliments to David Gray, he’s under severe pressure but he’s set up his team today on the back of an important win, probably full of confidence, to say ‘you know what? Let’s go and have a go.’

“But you still have to retain the fundamentals to defend properly. Lewis Miller there (for opening goal), just do the basics right out of possession.

“And if you’re manager is willing to let you have a license to thrill and take risks, then go and do that.”

Can Hibs avoid relegation?

Hibs have now had their worst start to the season since 1979/80.

The squad they have assembled should be good enough to climb the table but the longer the season goes without managing that, fears over relegation will continue to grow.

McCann insists that can’t be ignored but is still of the belief they can get themselves clear, and Saturday’s performance is evidence of that.

Asked the ‘R word’ question, he added: “Well, I think all those stats point towards relegation. But I do believe if they can play with that bravery and put the polish on it…

“I think they’ve got players, you even look at the players they’re bringing off the bench, there’s still quality there. Josh Campbell, Hoilett coming off the bench.

“But it’s alright saying I think they’re good enough. They have to start proving it.”
