Another weekend, more contentious decisions.

Premiership managers once again had gripes with refereeing decisions from the weekend, none more so than Jim Goodwin who fumed at the decision to award Kilmarnock a late penalty against Dundee United.

VAR intervened and that allowed Bruce Anderson to score from the spot.

Alex Gogic felt aggrieved after being sent off for St Mirren as they lost to Motherwell, again to a late goal going against the ten men.

Sky Sports’ Ref Watch team have now pored over some of the decisions.

Arne Engels tackle vs Hibs

As Hibs lost away from home to Celtic, there was a VAR check for a potential stamp from home midfielder Arne Engels on Joe Newell.

But the referee’s decision of yellow card was stuck to.

Dermot Gallagher agreed with that, explaining: “Yellow card. He’s reckless, he doesn’t need to make that challenge but I don’t think he stamps down on him.

“He comes in, he’s late. I think yellow card. I’m in agreement with the referee.”

The team had earlier decided Moises Caicedo deserved a red for Chelsea and it was suggested it was a similar tackle.

But Sue Smith said: “I don’t think it is. I think it’s a different challenge. I don’t think there’s any force, more of a touch down on him.”

Kilmarnock penalty vs Dundee United

Kilmarnock earned a point at Dundee United thanks to late penalty from Bruce Anderson.

But Jim Goodwin branded the spot kick call ‘very, very, very soft’ after Richard Odada was adjudged to have caught Bobby Wales.

The referee didn’t immediately award anything but changed after watching the monitor.

Gallagher said: “There’s no doubt he catches him. If you look at where the referee is, he’s got a perfect view so he knows how hard he catches him.

“The only thing I was surprised at was having a view like that, having gone to the screen, I was surprised he didn’t stick with his original decision.”

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said: “I wasn’t convinced he caught him. I’m not convinced at all, one of those inconclusive ones.”

Alex Gogic St Mirren red card vs Motherwell

Alex Gogic was sent off for St Mirren against Motherwell as he picked up a second yellow for a tackle on Moses Ebiye.

Gallagher thought it was harsh, explaining: “I actually felt a bit sorry for him to be honest because he catches him in his running motion and it is a foul.

“Is it a yellow card to give him a red card? I think he feels a little bit aggrieved.

“I think that’s a bit harsh to be honest but the referee has seen it differently and we’re all different.”

Warnock insisted: “I hate that decision because where is the defender meant to go?”
