Stephen Robinson reckons Motherwell made Rangers sweat for their victory at Ibrox as the Steelmen turned in a valiant display.

They raced into a 1-0 lead via Devante Cole in the first-half before Jermain Defoe hit back before the break. Filip Helander’s header ten minutes from time sealed a late win for the Gers.

Robinson believes that his side were well worth a point and that Rangers were ‘hanging on’ for their three points.

He told the Daily Record (page 48, 28/10/19): “Had we gone in at halftime 1-0 up then it might have been different but sometimes these things go against you.

We went 3-5-2 and then changed to 4-3-3 and caused Rangers a lot of problems. I have to give credit to the players. We showed a lot of quality. We have no right to come here and play like that. It shows what strides we have made and how far the players have come.

“By the end Rangers were hanging on. They are a top side, you don’t go to Porto and get a draw if you are not a top side. They are an excellent team and for us to come here and create chances with their fans getting frustrated shows you how far we have come.”

Robinson and Motherwell did trouble Rangers

This performance should give Motherwell great belief as they strive for a place in the top six. With a change in style and formation, the visitors really troubled their hosts.

Instead of the slick passing and skill Motherwell have shown at times this term, they reverted back to a more robust approach. Rangers seemed to be shocked by this and didn’t react quickly to it.

Eventually though as Motherwell tired and Rangers adapted, the home side’s quality showed. Robinson will feel as if his side should have earned a point but Rangers just about edged it.

Take nothing away from the performance though, Motherwell really did trouble Rangers and almost caused a shock in Glasgow.
