He’s been linked with moves to Asia and Celtic – but Ryan Gauld is now a player in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps after signing a deal until 2024.
The former Dundee United attacking midfielder was a well-coveted free agent after a brilliant season in Portugal’s Liga Nos with Farense. Celtic were said to be keeping tabs on his situation with a view to a transfer after his Farense contract expired while clubs across Asia and Europe were linked with Gauld.

Whitecaps sign Gauld on a three-year deal and joins the MLS club as a designated player. Gauld started his career with Dundee United, earning a big move to Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in 2014.
Vancouver Whitecaps sporting director and chief executive officer Axel Schuster said: “We are very pleased to welcome Ryan to our club. We identified Ryan at the attacking midfield position early in the offseason and began our formal pursuit at the start of January.
“It was a complicated process due to several factors but as he was our top target, we never gave up. He is a difference maker, brings experience, as well as an exceptional work rate, all qualities we identified as being key characteristics that we need in this position.
“Ryan and his representatives have been a pleasure to work with and we are thrilled that he is committed for the next three plus years to not only this club but the city and people of Vancouver.”
