Scot Gemmill is delighted with Billy Gilmour’s return to his Scotland U21s squad after the Chelsea star’s knee injury.
The talented teenager had a breakthrough 2019/20 campaign, making 11 appearances for Chelsea in senior competition as well as captaining their U23s side.

After the Premier League’s return from lockdown in the summer though, Gilmour suffered a bad knee injury. It required surgery and he’s been out of action ever since.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had hinted last month a return was close but Gemmill was set to be missing his star man for upcoming Euro U21s qualifiers against Croatia and Greece.
Gilmour wasn’t named in the initial squad but has now been called into the fold for matches in which Scotland could top their qualification group. It’s a big step on the road to a return to Chelsea action too and Gemmill is thrilled to call upon the midfielder again.

Billy Gilmour’s inclusion in the squad is a great boost ahead of our games next month as he returns from his injury,” the Scotland U21s manager said. “We’ve been in communication with Chelsea regarding his rehabilitation.
“I’d like to thank them for their assistance and making their player available. I’m delighted his next step in recovery is being called up to the 21s squad.
“He picked up an injury in July but he’s recovered well and we know his experience with the 21s will not only aid us in our two games but also help Billy in his return.”
