Scotland player ratings v Israel as contrasting performances occur

Scotland couldn’t find a crucial second goal against Israel as the nation’s World Cup ambition took a hit.

Dor Peretz’s long range effort beat David Marshall before Ryan Fraser levelled in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw with an Israel side Scotland have now faced six times since 2018. The likes of Arsenal star Kieran Tierney shone while Derby County keeper David Marshall will be gutted after the match.

It leaves Scotland third in their World Cup qualifying group, two points behind Austria in second and four off leaders Denmark ahead of a match with Faroe Islands at Hampden on Wednesday. Here’s how we rated those involved.

David Marshall – 5

He’s got plenty of credit in the bank with the Tartan Army but the Derby County star will be disappointed. He didn’t have a lot to do, but when Peretz took his shot from range, it should have been saved. The Derby County keeper could only help it into the top corner.

Grant Hanley – 6

Looked to be in a few awkward spots in the first-half but recovered well in the second after a change from 3-5-2 to 4-2-3-1.

Jack Hendry – 5

A learning curve for the Oostende player. He was hooked at half-time after a shaky performance, the Israel forward line causing him all sorts of problems on the right-hand-side. He’ll take plenty away from the test.

Kieran Tierney – 9

A colossus again for Scotland and by far the best player on the park. The Arsenal full-back shone at left-centre-back in two different formations, his hosts not getting by him once all night. Perhaps deserves a shot in his natural position as the Arsenal man attacked well too and had one shot saved by Ofir Marciano.

Stephen O’Donnell – 7

Another good shift from the Motherwell right-back. Was up and down the line all night and made two crucial blocks in the second half.

John McGinn – 6

Wasn’t a presence in the first half but made an impact in the second half once he was moved further up the pitch. A quiet showing by his high standards though.

Scott McTominay – 6

Kept things ticking over in the middle of the park. Had two good chances to score with free headers inside the box.

Callum McGregor – 6

Industrious shift from the Celtic midfielder. Won his second balls and made plenty of key passes.

Andy Robertson – 6

Penned back for large spells of the first half but looked brighter going forward in the second. Should have set Lyndon Dykes up for a tap-in with the game still at 1-1.

Ryan Fraser – 8

Scotland’s lively attacking threat, the Newcastle United winger was dangerous for Scotland and got his goal as just reward.

Che Adams – 7

A brilliant full debut from the Southampton star. He set up Fraser with a lovely threaded pass and he tested Israeli keeper Marciano on numerous occasions too. Promising signs.

Ryan Christie – 3

On at the break and he huffed and puffed, but little came off for him.

Lyndon Dykes – 3

Given the final 16 minutes in place of Adams.

Kenny McLean – 3

Replaced McGinn in the second half and provided like-for-like coverage.

Stuart Armstrong – 2

Cameo at the end.
