Hearts competed a bit of a signing coup on Friday when Gary Mackay-Steven joined the club on a free transfer. Mackay-Steven had been looking for a new club since leaving New York City FC at the end of the MLS season.

The 30-year-old had been linked with a return to his former club Aberdeen, but instead agreed to join Hearts in a deal until 2023.

Experience will be vital

Mackay-Steven will likely be a key man for the Tynecastle club in their bid to earn promotion back to the Premiership. Robbie Neilson’s side is currently top of the league, but their recent 3-1 defeat to Dundee shows that work still has to be done before promotion is guaranteed.

The signing of Mackay-Steven will help with that. The player will add some experience to the squad. It should not be forgotten that he has won numerous trophies from his time at Celtic. Those include three league titles.

Mackay-Steven will have to wait until next week to make his Hearts debut, as the weather has wrecked havoc with their fixture schedule. They are set to be in action next against Alloa next Saturday.

Unsurprisingly, many Hearts fans on social media seem delighted that the club have pulled off the signing of Mackay-Steven.

Fans will be eager to see player in action

One fan described the signing as brilliant, whilst another declared that it was excellent. No doubt those fans will be eager to see Mackay-Steven make his debut for the Tynecastle club.

It is just a pity that they might have to wait a while longer to see him play in person.

Here are some of the best reactions from Twitter to the Mackay-Steven transfer.
