Hibs announced the departure of Sean Mackie, just before the transfer window slammed shut on transfer deadline day.

The left-back has joined Dundee on a season-long loan deal. He has started once for the Hibees this term, but it was not a game to remember, getting sent off in a 6-1 thrashing by Rangers.

That doesn’t make him any less of a promising talent. Mackie does need minutes on a regular basis to enhance his development, but given the state of play at Hibs, some fans are rightly confused by it.

Some supporters have reacted the news.

Hibs have gambled by sending Mackie out on loan

Hibs announced the signing of Jason Naismith on deadline day, but he is a different player to Mackie. Naismith’s a right-back, leaving a gap at left-back.

Lewis Stevenson is now the club’s only recognised left-back. If he gets injured, someone will have to play out of position to cover him.

Sure, it’ll be great for Mackie to play regular minutes, but he is needed at Easter Road. One injury could hand him his big break in Leith.

His disastrous Ibrox display showed that he is still very raw, but there is a player in him. He is good at getting forward and is fairly decent in defence, even if it does need a bit of tidying up.

David Gray, Tom James, Ryan Porteous and Darren McGregor are all defenders who have struggled with injury this term. Sending one out on loan is understandably confusing some supporters.

Mackie will ply his trade in the Championship with the Dee this season and now Hibs fans will just be hoping he comes back to Leith stronger next term.
