Falkirk star Connor Sammon has opened up on facing Rangers’ Connor Goldson in the recent League Cup meeting between the sides – and revealed that he loved having the chance to test himself against some of the best defenders in the country.

The Ibrox side have broken several clean sheet records so far this season as Steven Gerrard’s side look like ending Celtic’s dominance of the Premiership – and the Irishman was happy with how the Bairns played against them, despite coming out on the end of a 4-0 defeat.

Sammon almost added his name to the short list of players to have scored against Rangers this season when he came close to scoring soon after the restart, and still doesn’t know how the ball ended up in Jon McLaughlin’s arms.

The Bairns travel to face Clyde this weekend in League One as they look to maintain their four point lead over Cove Rangers at the top of the table – and insists there was lots to learn from the League Cup loss.

“It was a challenge I enjoyed, we knew going into the game that Rangers were absolutely flying – both in the league and in Europe,” Sammon said, speaking to Not The Old Firm.

“When you’re watching a team do so well you think ‘how would we fare against them’? Although the result didn’t go for us, I thought that overall we played some really good stuff, caused them problems and, for me personally, I enjoyed coming up against the defenders that they have. But there’s still lots for us to learn and I really enjoyed it. Apart from the result, obviously.

“I still don’t know how that didn’t head towards the goal; it just seemed to go right back into the keeper’s hands so it’s just one of those things. Sometimes they fall for you, sometimes they don’t. It was a strange one that it didn’t go in.”
